Last week, we had a wonderful time with a small group of students who came to learn Spanish in San Miguel de Allende, which has quickly become one of our favorite Spanish immersion destinations.
Why is it so special? The town’s slow pace, the stunning art-filled boutique hotel we call home, and the vibrant colors and music greet you the moment you step outside. Add to that the joy of working with a dedicated group of people making great strides in their Spanish.
Maybe you should judge for yourself – here’s a breakdown of our week in the San Miguel de Allende Spanish Immersion:
Learn Spanish in San Miguel de Allende – Fluenz Spanish Immersion Day-by-day
SUNDAY
Our students arrived, most flying in from North America, with a couple coming from Mexico City after participating in another immersion program with us. Everyone was picked up by a private driver and taken to our beautiful hotel in downtown San Miguel . . . . time to get ready for the week ahead.
MONDAY
The immersion began with breakfast in the hotel courtyard, followed by an introduction to our team of Spanish coaches and a rundown of the week’s logistics and then it was time for students’ first Spanish classes in San Miguel de Allende. Each student had daily one-on-one sessions and small group classes, tailored to their Spanish level. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at one of our partner restaurants.
TUESDAY
Between morning and afternoon sessions we took an exciting excursion: a guided tour of the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, known as the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico.” This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a stunning example of Mexican Baroque art and holds significant historical importance in Mexico’s fight for independence.
WEDNESDAY
By midweek, everyone’s Spanish had improved noticeably – conversations are flowing and everybody’s in the Spanish groove. We capped the day with a tasting-menu dinner at Aperi, one of San Miguel’s top restaurants. Their modern Mexican style featured aguachile, duck magret with mole, buñuelos . . . . an unforgettable culinary experience.
THURSDAY
Class as usual, but following several jam-packed days of activity, students had a free evening. Some explored the artisanal markets, or went art-hunting at the town’s prestigious art galleries, while others wandered through the central square to admire the cathedral or watch a traditional procession . . . . one student even indulged in a massage—well-deserved after all the hard work.
FRIDAY
It’s hard to believe the week went by so fast. Re-energized for the final stretch, we had our last couple of Spanish classes, delicious tuna tostadas for lunch, and celebrated the week’s accomplishments. This is always bittersweet –whether you came to learn Spanish in San Miguel de Allende or Costa Rica, Oaxaca or Spain– new friends, memories, and immense progress toward achieving your Spanish goals.
SATURDAY
While most students headed home, a few stayed an extra night or two to further explore this magical town.
What a magical week!
