Is Spanish Hard to Learn in Mexico City? [Fluenz Student Reviews]

Participants with varying language backgrounds describe their experiences below.

Julia Vitullo-Martin | New York City, NY

“If I were armed I might shoot the next person I hear say that Spanish is easy. Cuz it isn’t. I’ve studied French, German, and Latin. Unlike, say, German, Spanish has a relatively low barrier to entry. You can say a lot of simple things quickly, as opposed to German or even French for that matter. But as soon as you reach a low- to mid-level and you have to deal with the verbs and their complicated tenses, Spanish gets hard. Which is when Fluenz proves its worth. Their sleek, superb teaching method anticipates and gets you through the many speed bumps Spanish will throw in your way. Rather than stopping dead at trouble–which is what I did pre-Fluenz–you’ll learn to push through smoothly and elegantly.”

Julia describes the program’s practical application: walking around Polanco with a Fluenz coach, asking for directions, ordering coffee, and shopping in Spanish provided real-world practice that reinforced classroom learning.

“I have taken many Spanish courses in my life, from university courses, to studying abroad, to online/live classes. Fluenz’s theory of language learning is totally different than–and in my opinion, much superior to–the others on the market. Fluenz coaches are native Spanish-speakers who are also 100% fluent in English. Many of them have graduate degrees, some of which are in linguistics or literature. Their English fluency and grammatical/linguistic knowledge of both languages allow them to explain Spanish grammar by comparing/contrasting with English grammar. I cannot count on two hands the number of “lightbulb” moments I experienced throughout the course simply because my coaches were able to explain things in a different way than teachers have in the past.”

Matthew notes that the program consisted of two two-hour sessions daily, alternating between individual coaching and small group work, with continuous monitoring of student progress and methodology adjustments between classes.

“I admit it! I was a bit of a skeptic! How much can you learn in a week? I’m a beginner! Maybe I would learn some vocabulary, simple phrases but then what? Well, after the Fluenz app and the 4 hours a day of intense, individual or small group classes, I was amazed. I was able to go out into the city and comfortably interact with the shop keepers and people on the street. Am I fluent? Hell no! But I learned a whole bunch and I was able to comfortably communicate with native Spanish speakers.”

“Excellent immersion experience. The level of instruction is exceptional. They work hard to meet you where you are and challenge you to achieve new levels of proficiency with your language learning. I also do the classes on Zoom with Fluenz. I will do another immersion experience in January 2025 with them and likely a couple more next year as well.”

“The Spanish immersion lessons were great (twice daily/solo and in small groups) with different instructors so you had the opportunity to experience different teaching styles. But all the lessons emphasized speaking in Spanish – everyday conversations so that when the trip ended and I stayed a few extra days, I felt very comfortable conversing with folks in CDMX. Fluenz has a great way of making learning the language easy and painless!”

“Just finished my second immersion with Fluenz, and already booking a third in a different location. The program is thoughtfully organized with the perfect balance of classes, downtime and outings. The teachers are experienced and meet you where you are (in my case, a beginner). The lessons are challenging but I always felt encouraged and supported. There were participants of all ages and Spanish levels and everyone’s Spanish improved dramatically in just one week.”

The cultural programming during the week (architectural and museum visits; talks; restaurants; etc.) add depth and breadth to the week long experience.”
